Horses

Myrewyn began with a pony — one safe, sweet pony to teach children to ride. As the program grew, more ponies and horses came, always with the same high standard of being safe and willing teachers. Our ponies and horses are also healthy, happy, sound, and well-trained and fancy enough to go to shows. We have no kick-and-go or follow-the-leader ponies.

In the US there is a tendency to put even small children on full-sized horses very quickly, and I’m not sure whether that is due to a lack of appropriate ponies or an American ideal of “bigger is better”. While it may be possible for a small child to learn to ride a large horse, it is much safer for a child to learn on a pony. We have a great group of experienced lesson ponies and appropriately sized saddles for young riders so no child will have to ride a big horse or slip around in a too-big saddle. Of course we also have a couple larger horses for older children and adults wanting to learn to ride.
