your lesson will be
-
Personalized
Lessons will be tailored to meet the needs and goals of the individual rider. Beginner lessons will be private. Intermediate riders may ride in a small group and benefit from the examples of other riders at a similar level.
-
Comprehensive
The lesson will begin with learning to groom and tack up the horse and end with untacking, blanketing if necessary, and putting the horse away. Time spent in the saddle will vary from 30-50 minutes, depending on how much help the rider needs with these tasks.
-
Integrative
Since becoming a horseperson is more than just learning to ride, I may ask my students to do additional work outside the barn such as reading or improving basic strength and fitness.
Lessons at Myrewyn may look a little different. I approach training a young horse or a new rider in much the same way — working slowly, addressing fear and ensuring lesson comprehension before moving on. Most new riders will begin on the lead or lunge to learn proper balance before being given the reins at each new gait.
Lessons may be held indoors or out, may be mostly unmounted at times while we learn concepts or horse management (especially useful on bad weather days), and may occasionally be a ride following me on the trails to learn riding over varied terrain.
Progress may look slow at times and should not be compared to friends who may be riding at more typical modern riding schools where horses are more automatic and riders progress along a more predictable timeline. Learning in this way takes some extra time but will allow a rider to pursue their equestrian goals whatever those may be.
Please note that after much consideration, I no longer offer lesson horses. I am currently accepting students age sixteen and up who can provide their own horse. I do have some horses available for half lease for those who do not own a horse but are ready to step up to a leasing program.
